Vision Screenings

Children’s Vision Screening

The agency’s foremost contribution to the prevention of blindness is its child vision
screening program, which has served the children of Allegheny County for more than 45 years.preschooler having her vision screened by BVRS staff

One in 20 children has an undetected vision deficiency. Each year, BVRS provides vision screening to more than 14,000 children ages 1 to 6 years; correctable vision problems are found in more than 500 of those children.

Free vision screenings are provided by professional screening technicians in preschools and daycare centers throughout Allegheny County. The screenings include assessment of visual acuity, muscle balance, and for children ages 3 years and older, color deficiency using fun, game-centered activities.
